Chapter 6
Melissa sent lots of happy emojis.
Keiran, who had helped me with the discharge procedures, stood by the
door.
“Why are you laughing so happily?” he asked.
“I feel much better now, so of course I’m happy,” I said, then turned off my phone.
Keiran nodded and said, “If that’s the case, I have a favor to ask.”
Austin is a second–tier city. I chose to attend university there, driven by the hope of uncovering new opportunities to start my own business.
After years of selling beef pasta, I also started a live–streaming sales model.
I’m very familiar with the local food industry.
Keiran invited me to be the food and beverage consultant for a new shopping mall, which suited me well.
I traveled from Boston to Austin with him.
As soon as we landed, we headed straight to the mall. After wandering around all morning, I finally found a moment to use the restroom.
When I came out, I saw Alfred.
He was waiting outside the nursing room for Melissa.
Alfred looked really happy to see me.
He quickly turned to make sure Melissa wasn’t coming out yet, then. grabbed my arm.
He asked urgently, “Helena, why did you block me everywhere online?
“The baby’s naming ceremony and welcome party will be held together. You have to come.”
Alfred’s eyes looked tired, and he seemed much older.
It looked like Melissa really treated him like a nanny.
I stayed quiet. He pointed to a nearby baby store and muttered, “Are you here to buy presents for the child too?
“I thought that store was pretty nice. The baby stuff was all adorable.
I sneered internally, “Yeah, they’re cute, but my kids never even got to see them.”
“Alfred, come in and grab the maternity bag.” Melissa called out, leaning her head out.
Alfred wanted to say something but just turned and went into the room.
Melissa came out first holding the baby. She raised her eyebrows at me and said. “You’re his ex–wife, right?”
I replied coldly, “Right. So when you called me the nanny that day, was it just to get under my skin?”
With Alfred gone, Melissa dropped the act. “No man likes a woman without any charm.”
“Yes, but sometimes charm isn’t about people, it can also mean the charm of money, right?” I responded.
Melissa was so mad at me that she suddenly pushed her child into my
arms.
Before I could react, the child fell down and started crying loudly.
Alfred ran out of the nursing room and pushed me away.
Melissa cried sadly, “I only wanted my child to be close to her, but I didn’t expect her to throw him.”
Alfred carefully picked up the child and stared at me angrily, “What are you doing? If the baby gets hurt, you’ll go to jail! You’re trying to hurt him on purpose!”
I felt a bit lost, and Melissa got on her knees in front of me, crying and saying sorry.
“I just thought the stuff in the baby store was too pricey, so I suggested you make some handmade gifts for my child because he might like them. If this made you feel bad, I’m sorry.
“I’m sorry, really sorry.”
“Melissa, stop acting. I didn’t touch you or the baby,” I warned her, my voice tight.
Alfred slapped me on the cheek, “You cruel woman!”
My face burned from the pain.
Without blinking, I raised my hand and slapped him twice.
“One slap is for you, the other for her. You never signed the divorce papers. What you’re doing is a bigamy. I have already filed for divorce. because of your affair!
“Just wait and see!”

I glanced at the baby in Alfred’s arms, then pulled out my phone and called the emergency number.
“There are security cameras here. Don’t try to accuse me of things I didn’t do. Take the child to the hospital quickly and don’t delay the treatment.”
If the baby didn’t make it, there’d be no drama left to enjoy at the welcome party.
“You…” Alfred looked at me with shaking eyes.
