Chapter 7
Melissa’s child was fine, just had a minor head injury.
She came back to the Mackey family’s residence in Boston two days before her child’s welcome party.
I still don’t know how to face my father, so I’ve been staying at Keiran’s house.
Keiran and I have known each other since we were kids, and his family chose me to be his wife.
Being around him made me feel more at ease than ever before.
But suddenly, I felt a bit regretful.
Why did I give up such a great guy and fall for Alfred?
People are like that. If they never tried something before, even if it’s gross, it might seem tasty at first.
“This is your first time meeting Melissa, right? I won’t go inside later.” Keiran told me while driving.
I could already smell the gossip in the air.
He looked at me and admitted, “Melissa kept bothering me before, but I just treated her like a sister and helped her because of your dad.
“But she ended up confessing to me and wanted to marry me. When I gently turned her down, she ran away from home.
“She spent all day using her credit card and going out. And that belly
photo, she even sent it to me in a private message.”
I gave Keiran a friendly pat on the shoulder and showed him some sympathy.
Alfred and Melissa went back to the Mackey family’s residence together.
But Melissa stayed in her room, while Alfred had to use the guest room.
He didn’t seem to mind at all.
He had never been to such a big place before.
For the first couple of days, he roamed the garden, touching things and looking around like everything was new to him.
He pointed at the outside wall and said it looked damaged, but a servant told him the building was made to appear that way since it was styled like an old castle.
After a while, the servants around the house started to look down on him.
Even when Melissa insulted him in front of others by calling him a country bumpkin, he didn’t say a word–he just smiled.
People started thinking he was dull, so they ignored him and began gossiping about me instead.
“I heard Helena Mackey has returned?” someone said.
“Melissa is smart. She picked a weak man and had a son with him, so the child could be the heir of the Mackey family.”
“Looks like Helena can’t have kids anymore. If that’s true, coming back makes no difference. The Mackey family’s future might be in Melissa’s hands now.”
When Melissa heard those words, a look of pride quickly crossed her
face.
I wore a designer gown and slowly descended the staircase from the second floor.
The long hem of my gown was accidentally snagged on a shelf in the

A vase fell and broke into pieces on the floor.
Alfred had walked through this house plenty of times and knew exactly where his works were displayed.
The moment he heard the crash, he rushed over, clearly upset.
“How careless! Melissa spent a fortune getting this at an auction!
“Now that it’s ruined, you couldn’t pay it back even if you worked your whole life!”
Alfred focused only on the broken vase, ranting without stopping. Then,

I let out a mocking laugh.
I shook off the shards of the vase that had torn my gown.
All of Alfred’s years of hard work don’t even compare to the price of one of my custom–made dresses.
My father came in from the garden and waved for Alfred to come over.
Alfred assumed he had been caught speaking with me earlier.
He quickly tried to distance himself.
“Mr. Mackey, I don’t know that woman. She broke an expensive vase, and I was just trying to help by telling her to say sorry to Melissa.”
My father chuckled and replied, “How could you not know her? One day. your child will call Helena his aunt.”
