Three years ago, my beloved Trevon Parker sent me abroad against my will.
Now, I could finally return.
And I no longer loved Trevon.
However, everyone still gave me a warning look.
“Seraphina Duarte, don’t pester Trevon! Stay outta the way between him and Hannah!”
“Indeed. So vile! She should be in a jar! Why didn’t she die abroad?”
I looked at them in silence.
Later, a piece of news really broke me down.
“Alec, please don’t die. You said you’d come back for me…”
Trevon pushed through the crowd and held me in his arms tightly.

“Seraphina, you have some nerve to come back!”

“You didn’t get beat up when you were abroad? They really should have taught you a proper lesson.”
“It’s such a shame the plane you took didn’t explode.””
My phone kept buzzing.
But I turned a blind eye to them.
I took out my laptop to send an email.
There was only one sentence I typed.
“I’m back safely.”
I got the email out but never heard back because the person was offline.
I stared blankly at my laptop.
As I heard footsteps, I put it away.
A woman with her hair tied into a bun walked in–it was my
mom.
“Sera, why are you looking at me like this? I’m not a stranger.”
Lost in thought, I didn’t answer her.
She wiped away her tears and left the room.
At night, the sounds of things being smashed came from the study.

“She pushed Ms. Nash downstairs, and Ms. Nash was in a coma for three months!”
“Stop it.
“It’s all over now, Trevon and Ms. Nash are about to get engaged. We don’t want anything to mess this up, right?”
My hands holding the glass trembled slightly.
Then I turned around and walked away quietly.
I got up early in the morning.
Then I sat in front of my laptop.
After quite a while, I went downstairs to grab some food.
My mom was watching TV in the living room.
I heard the host’s voice.
“Breaking news! The Parker family has just announced that the engagement ceremony of Trevon Parker and Hannah Nash will be held in mid–next month.”
I was stunned.
Were they getting engaged on an island?
A memory came back to me.
I used to pester Trevon, begging him.
“Getting engaged on an island will be so romantic. Let’s get engaged there, OK? Please?”
He looked indifferent and even annoyed.

“Cut it out, Seraphina.
“I’m working.”
Sensing he wasn’t happy, I immediately sat aside obediently. “Alright. Go on then. I’ll be quiet.”
Then I came to my senses.
Upon seeing me, my mom was startled.
“Why are you downstairs, Sera?
“You wanna go out? Where to? I’ll go with you.”
She had someone bring her bag.
Then she fumbled for the remote, wanting to turn off the TV quickly.
She seemed nervous.
I knew what was going on in her mind.
She was worried that I’d latch onto Trevon again like the way I had done back then.
But I wouldn’t.
Never again.
I said, “No. I’m just here to fetch something to eat.”
“What?” She was stunned.
Taking a bottle of milk, I went upstairs.
As I reached the stairs, she still seemed surprised.
